2 Samuel 20:20, “Joab answered, Far be it, far be it from me that I should swallow up or destroy!”
Joab just killed Amasa, who was to have been his successor, in verse 10.
NIV Bible Study Notes: “(See 2:23, 3:27.) For the second time Joab commits murder to secure his position as commander of David’s army (See 1 Kings 2:5-6). In defiance of David’s order, Joab reassumes command on his own initiative (See v. 23).
Joab was so convinced that he would never “swallow up or destroy” that he repeated the phrase, “Far be it”.
After all, murdering Abner (3:27) and Amasa (20:10) was just politics.
This election year I will spend less time listening to what the candidates say and more time reviewing their actions of the past.
