Matthew 6:1, Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.”
What does “practicing your righteousness” mean?
- Going to church?
- Reading your Bible?
- Giving in the offering?
- Saying grace before meals?
- Keeping the 10 Commandments?
Actually, it is none on of the above! According to the next verse, “practicing your righteousness” is “giving to the needy.”
Matthew 6:2, “Thus, when you give to the needy…”
Making a show of your gift embarrasses the recipient and cheats you out of being rewarded by your Heavenly Father.
