God Speaks To, and Through, a Pagan Man

I rode to church with my son on Wednesday night to get in a little extra practice before worship. He drives like me and preaches as he drives!

(Now I know how my kids felt during all of my hurried drives to school, giving instructions!)

I wrote a Facebook post about it and read it to him, asking if it was okay to post it. After giving me permission, he stopped at a 4-way stop sign and said, “We are not there yet. Do you know Jesus?”

He finished his “altar call” as we reached the church. I jumped out and ran behind the truck into the building before he could take an offering! Lol

We had been discussing the bombings, the Syrian refugees, and ISIS. He wondered if our leaders were responding in a Christ-like way.

I told him God has used our leaders to drive us to our knees in prayer.

Then Pastor Monte Knudsen’s sermon was about praying for our leaders. He taught out of 2 Timothy 2:1-8; and at the time Paul wrote this chapter Nero was the ruler!

“We are to pray that those in authority will: rule in such a way that we might have peace, (2 Timothy 2:2); do good and punish evil, (Romans 13:3); come to the knowledge of the truth, (2 Timothy 2:2); have their hearts turned like a river by the Lord, (Proverbs 21:1); hear from God in dreams and visions while they sleep, (Job 33:14-15); and that God open their ears and terrify them with warnings, (Job 33:11).” Pastor Monte Knudsen

Today we read of a pagan man who God met, spoke to, and spoke through.

Numbers 23:3, “And Balaam said to Balak, ‘Stand beside your burnt offering, and I will go. Perhaps the Lord will come to meet me, and whatever he shows me I will tell you.’ And he went to a bare height, and God met Balaam…” ESV

“Balaam lived a long distance away from Moab, yet he must have been quite famous for Balak to have known of him and have sent for him. Archeological evidence from Deir Alla indicates that Balaam was highly regarded by pagans five hundred years after his death. His activity is described as divination and sorcery (Numbers 22:7; 23:3; 24:1)…however, the Lord overruled Balaam and communicated his will through the pagan prophet…” ESV Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible Notes.

Dear Lord,

I pray for all of our leaders in all parties. I pray for wisdom in the decisions they are faced with today. Guide them to bring about peace, do good, and punish evil.
