I pray for the families of these children every day. They died at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut.
I also pray for the families of the adults who lost their lives that day: Rachel Davino, Dawn Hochsprung, Anne Marie Murphy, and Lauren Rousseau.
The death of a child is unthinkable. You can’t understand it. They were innocent and defenseless.
I struggled every year when I read today’s verse, but the notes helped me to understand.
Joshua 7:24, “And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the cloak and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters and his oxen and donkeys and sheep and his tent and all that he had…”
“Since Deuteronomy 24:16 prohibited the execution of children for the sins of their fathers, it is apparent that Achan’s children must have condoned or assisted him in what he did.” ESV Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible Notes.
Zerah, Achan’s father was not killed and that leads me to believe that he did not know what Achan had done.
We know how precious children are to you. Jesus rebuked his disciples when they tried to keep the kids away. Luke 18:16 tells us that Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them…” We pray for those families with a hole in their heart from losing a child. Comfort them as only you can.
