Promises

Jill and Paula have been friends for probably 50 years. To say they are close is putting it mildly. Last night, Jill told me she is getting her hair cut just like Paula’s. They already act like sisters; now they will be twins!

There is nothing like having a friend for decades. They just get you.

David and Jonathan were like that. Jonathan defied his father to protect David and his father almost killed him for it, 1 Samuel 20:33.

Yesterday we read how David had to leave his wife to get away from Saul, 1 Samuel 19:11-17. That meant he lost his job as commander in the army. To escape he had to go to his enemy’s country and pretend to be insane, 1 Samuel 21:10-13.

After the Philistines let him go, he wrote Psalms 56 and 34. I was not surprised to read, “…you have collected all my tears in your bottle…” Psalms 56:8.

I did not expect:

Psalms 56:10, “I praise God for what he has promised; yes, I praise the Lord for what he has promised.” NLT

When you have lost everything: your friends, your spouse, your job, and your dignity, you can hold on to God’s promises.

Dear Jesus,

You know the plans you have for me; I don’t. Help me to trust you and praise you regardless of my circumstances.

Amen
