Belteshazzar

This one is for Mike.

He digs deep into the Bible and then asks me questions. Sometimes, my answer is, “I don’t know.”

He asked me why Daniel is not referred to as Belteshazzar. After all, they changed Hadassah’s name to Esther and it stuck. Her story is in the book of Esther, not the book of Hadassah.

And, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were never referred to as Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah after their names changed in Daniel 1:7.

“Why didn’t the name Belteshazzar stick?

Daniel 4:8, “At last Daniel came in before me, and I told him the dream. (He was named Belteshazzar after my god, and the spirit of the holy gods is in him.)” New Living Translation

In this verse, King Nebuchadnezzar said Daniel was named Belteshazzar after his god. But, at the end of the chapter, he changed his allegiance to the Most High God.

Daniel 4:34, “After this time had passed, I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up to heaven. My sanity returned, and I praised and worshiped the Most High and honored the one who lives forever. his rule is everlasting, and his kingdom is eternal.” New Living Translation

Since Belteshazzar was his former god, he stopped giving honor to him, by addressing Daniel by his Jewish name. King Nebuchadnezzar was the one who changed his name back to Daniel.

Dear Father God,

The Bible is full of mysteries, but if we continue reading it, you reveal them to us. Thank You for this precious book.

In Jesus Name,

Amen

    • After all the times I said, “I don’t know” I am grateful that you still ask me questions! God is great, not me; I’ve read that verse at least 40 times and didn’t get it until yesterday! Lol
