I spent the day cleaning, decorating, and rearranging the basement in preparation for Thanksgiving. I am one of the lucky ones who will have 4 generations around my table.

In my study of Psalms 109:12 today, I finally understood the phrase, “punishing the children for the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”

“The close identity of a man with his children and of children with their parents, resulting from the tightly bonded unity of the three-or four-generation households of the ancient society, is alien to the modern reader, whose sense of self is highly individualistic. But that deep, profoundly human bond accounts for the ancient legal principle of ‘punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’ ” New International Version Study Bible Notes

Deuteronomy 28:18, tells us the fruit of your womb, crops of your land, calves of your herd, and the lambs of your flock are cursed if you disobey. They all lived in the same tent. If the grandparents were short of food, everyone was short of food! The responsibility for offenses was on all generations.

Numbers 18:1, “Then the Lord said to Aaron: ‘You, your sons, and your relatives from the tribe of Levi will be held responsible for any offenses related to the sanctuary.’ ” New Living Translation
