Workers

It haunts me still. The sight of my baby crawling to the window, pulling himself up, and crying, “Mommy.” His face flushed with fever broke my heart.

But I was the only piano player and it was time for church. I knew his daddy would rock him while I was gone, but it wasn’t the same. After I played for worship, I went right home. I remembered that time when I read today’s verse:

Matthew 19:29, “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for My name’s sake shall receive a hundred times as much and inherit eternal life.” Modern English Version

I was feeling pretty good about myself until I read this verse:

Matthew 20:12, “Saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us, who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.’ ” Modern English Version

How many times have I complained to God when others put out only minimal effort? Or slack off when the senior pastor is not around? Another ouch. Sigh.

Dear Father God,

I don’t deserve anything and yet You lavish Your grace on me. Forgive me for judging other workers.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
