Reading the story of David and Abigail made me think, “Aw, it must have been love at first sight.” Then I remembered the story of Ruth.
Ruth 4:5, “Then Boaz said, ‘On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth . . .’ ” Modern English Version
Abigail was part of Nabal’s inheritance. She may have had other offers of marriage. But, before we are too hard on David, we need to remember Abigail knew David would become king.
1 Samuel 25:30, 31, “It will be, when the Lord does for my lord according to all the good that He has spoken concerning you and has appointed you ruler over Israel, that this will be no grief to you, nor an offense of heart to my lord, either that you have shed blood without cause, or that my lord has avenged himself. . . .” Modern English Version
The marriage brought David great wealth and turned Abigail into a future queen. Now I understand what David was talking about in Psalms 16.
Psalms 16:6, “The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; yes, an inheritance is beautiful for me.” Modern English Version
What if someone treats us badly? What do we do with the hurt, anger, and desire for vengeance?
“Overcoming Bad Memories”
- Reject them: Isaiah 43:18, “Do not . . . ponder the things of the past.
- Reframe them: Genesis 50:20, “You meant it for evil, God meant it for good.”
- Refocus your thoughts: Philippians 3:13, “Forget things behind, reach for things ahead.” Isaiah 54:4, “Forget the shame . . ” Isaiah 65:17-18, “Former things shall not be remembered forever in that which I create.”
Satan wants you to keep revisiting the hurts of the past to keep you from your inheritance.
Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans that I have for you, says the Lord, plans for peace and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Modern English Version
Dear Father God,
I know You are my avenger. I know You have plans for me. Help me keep my focus on things ahead.
