Fisherman

“The real test of your faith comes when nothing you’ve tried has worked, and God tells you to do something that stretches your faith to the limit. . . . God works in three ways: (1) He uses the common to do the uncommon. (2) He moves you out from the security of the shallow to the risks of the deep. (3) He involves you in one thing to teach you another.”

“If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat”  by John Ortberg

This devotion was from the time Jesus called Peter, (see Luke 5:4-11). They fished all night and didn’t catch anything. Jesus told them to throw their nets on the other side and they brought in a huge haul of fish.

After Jesus’ death and resurrection, Peter decided to go fishing. Once again, he caught nothing. Jesus told them to throw the nets on the other side and again they got a huge haul of fish.

John 21:6, “He said the them, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.’ So they threw it, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the abundance of fish.” Modern English Version

The first time Jesus performed this miracle, he called Peter to follow Him and be His disciple. The second time, He told Peter to feed His lambs – those who would soon believe in Him. He reminded Peter that he was no longer a fisherman, but a “fisher of men.”
