Men Should Be Silent in Church

I take my 5-subject notebook to church with me – the same one in which I write my blog posts. (I number the pages and keep an index in the front.)

God speaks to us constantly. He will show us something in the scripture and we will hear the same thing in a sermon! I take notes in church and try to record all the references. It’s easy to look back at sermons this way.

My husband also takes notes. If Pastor gives us 5 points, it is not uncommon for us to get the ones we missed from each other. But, I get irritated when David asks,

“What does he mean?”

(or worse)

“What’s for dinner?”

I love sharing the things I’ve learned from reading the Bible but not when I’m trying to take notes!

1 Corinthians 14:34, “Let your women remain silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak. They are commanded to be under obedience, as the law also says.” Modern English Version

* * * * * *

“In orthodox congregations, men and women are not permitted to sit together during prayer services….In some synagogues,…the women’s section is in the balcony and the men’s section is on the main floor of the sanctuary.” myjewishlearning.com/article/mehitzah-separate-seating-in-the-synagogue/

Paul was talking about women asking their husbands, who were sitting on the main floor, “What does he mean?” – from the balcony!

“Wives should not disrupt worship, talking when they should be listening, asking questions that could more appropriately be asked of their husbands at home. God’s Book of the law guides our manners and customs here. Wives have no license to use the time of worship for unwarranted speaking. Do you – both women and men – imagine that you’re a sacred oracle determining what’s right and wrong? Do you think everything revolves around you?” The Message

The passage applies equally to men and husbands! They should not:

  • Disrupt worship.
  • Talk instead of listening.
  • Ask questions they could ask at home.
  • Use bad manners by talking when someone is preaching.
  • Do any unwarranted speaking.

Did women speak in the New Testament Church?

“Yes!”

1 Corinthians 11:5, “But every woman who prays or prophesies…” Modern English Version

You cannot prophesy without speaking!

1 Corinthians 14:40, “Let all things be done decently and in order.” Modern English Version
