It’s Not the Limbo

I took dating seriously. I went on tons of first dates, but very few second dates. I wasn’t looking for a good time, I was seeking my husband.

Our first date was a blind date. He knew me because I played the piano. I didn’t know him because he was an usher. He was in the service while I was playing and in the office helping his uncle Dean count the offering during the sermon.

Our first date was a double date with my roommate and his best friend. (Who are still married!) We went to the roller rink. Those who could skate backward and those who could skate “The Limbo” amazed me.

For “The Limbo,” they brought out a long pole and set it on brackets with various notches. They started at the top, and after everyone passed under, they lowered it a notch. The only way to get under the lowest notch was to stretch out one leg forward, lean your body forward, and at the last second, duck your head and lean the opposite knee out, all while maintaining your balance! That was the mental picture in my head when I read today’s verse.

Ezekiel 20:37, “I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.” Modern English Version

Pass under the rod. The way a shepherd counts or separates his flock (see Leviticus 27:32; Jeremiah 33:13; cf. Matthew 25:32-33).” New International Version Study Bible Notes

“Passing under the rod” was a lot like dating. It separated the sheep from the goats and you didn’t count unless you were faithful.
