The most famous chapter in the Bible is the 23rd Psalms. It speaks of the Lord taking care of us even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death. He feeds us even in captivity and promises goodness and mercy. A good example of this is found in today’s verses.
Jeremiah 52:33, 34, “Therefore Jehoiachin changed his prison garments and continually ate meals before him all the days of his life. For his allowance, there was a continual allowance given him by the king of Babylon, every day a portion all the days of his life until the day of his death.” Modern English Version
We read of two kings today:
- Jehoiachin spent time in prison, but eventually was, not only free, he ate at the king’s table and got an allowance, Jer. 52:31-34.
- Zedekiah watched sons killed, they put out his eyes, he was bound in shackles, carried off to Babylon, and forced to grind mill in prison for the rest of his life, Jer. 52:10, 11.
I wondered why they had such different outcomes. I went back and reread 2 Kings 24 & 25, and found the answer.
- Jehoiachin surrendered to the King of Babylon, 2 Kings 24:12.
- Zedekiah fled from the King of Babylon, 2 Kings 25:4.
When something is holding us captive, (health, unemployment, etc), we have two choices: run from God because of our circumstances, or surrender to God and trust that He has plans for our good.
