You Can’t Buy Your Inheritance

Abraham was a wealthy man, see Genesis 13:2. He knew his descendants would inherit the land of Canaan. He could have bought the land but he didn’t. He waited for God to give it.

When Sarah died, he needed a place to bury her. Ephron the son of Zohar had a field with a cave at the end of it. He offered to give it to Abraham, see 23:10, 11. Abraham insisted on paying for it.

Genesis 23:16, “…Abraham weighed out for Ephron four hundred shekels of silver, the price that he had named in the hearing of the Hittites, according to the standard commercial measure.” Modern English Version

God promises us an inheritance.

  • We can’t buy it.
  • We must wait.
  • We can’t let others give it to us.
