Volunteered with Abandon

December 16, 2018

I think I’m ready.

I practiced for an hour and a half each of the last three days. The synth player, bass player, and guitar player are all gone this week. It’s just me and the drummer.

I practiced each song with the videos on youtube.com. By Saturday, I was having fun practicing. I had the first three songs memorized.

Judges 5:2, “When they let down their hair in Israel, they let it blow wild in the wind. The people volunteered with abandon, bless God!” The Message

I admit I was a little nervous. So much could go wrong. I would be playing 2 keyboards and the pedals are iffy. One has a taped up cord and the other lost a screw.

The keyboards also shut off automatically. The big one turns on to recorded, obnoxious music. It takes pushing three buttons and turning a dial to set.

Judges 6:12, 13, 14, 16, “The angel of God appeared to him and said, ‘God is with you, O mighty warrior!’ (13) Gideon replied, ‘With me, my master? If God is with us, why has all this happened to us?…’ (14) But God faced him directly: ‘Go in this strength that is yours. Save Israel from Midian. Haven’t I just sent you?…’ (16) God said to him, ‘I’ll be with you. Believe me, you’ll defeat Midian as one man.’ ” The Message

We set the keyboards up on a double stand. I used 36″ of gaffe tape to keep the bottom keyboard from sliding. I taped down one pedal and ignored the one with the missing screw.

I split the big keyboard between the bass and the pads sound. I started practicing and it sounded awful!

This keyboard made everything sound muddy. The worship director asked me to play the songs on the other keyboard.

I switched but it didn’t have the pads sound. He didn’t like the bass part I was playing. He played a pattern on the drum and asked me to duplicate it.

“I need to play piano, synth, bass, and now a drum riff?” I exclaimed! (The worker from the Civic Center burst out laughing.)

The worship director decided I could play straight piano. We started the first song. It was so empty with just piano and drums. I layered strings with the piano. And played the other keyboard for the softest parts of the songs.

After practice, one of the vocalists said, “You look like a whipped pup.”

I told her I felt like a whipped pup! I explained about practicing all three parts. We threw out everything I practiced and I wasn’t sure what I was doing.

Then the worship director said, “Pamela, why don’t you pray for the service.”

“Perfect,” I replied, “I’m the one with the bent attitude.” I prayed the most disjointed prayer.

I didn’t know what I was doing now!

God whispered, “If you knew exactly what to do, you wouldn’t need Me.” Boy, did I!

Judges 6:23, “But God reassured him, ‘Easy now. Don’t panic. You won’t die.’ ” The Message

I ran into the guitar player after playing. (He is recovering from a broken arm.) We had a hot chocolate bar and I wasn’t going to miss out on that! We both got hot chocolate and he told me I did a good job.

God did a good job.

Has God ever switched things up on you?

No Battle Experience

December 15, 2018

“…through all delays, in spite of all the difficulties, and in the face of all the rejection we encounter in life. And in spite of our feelings and evidence to the contrary, and even when we cannot understand our way or our situation, may we still ‘trust also in Him; [for] He shall bring it to pass.’ The way will open, our situation will be changed, and the end result will be peace. …” Streams in the Desert, December 15

Judges 3:2, “He did it to train the descendants of Israel, the ones who had no battle experience, in the art of war.” The Message

I’m learning to take my fight to the highest power – God. I am not finding blogging success in the traditional way. Others will have to share my posts on social media.

I can identify with Shamgar. There is only one verse in the Bible about him. There is no record of his conversations with God or details of his battles. We don’t know how people reacted to him. Did they help him? Or were they indifferent?

Judges 3:31, “Shamgar son of Anath came after Ehud. Using a cattle prod, he killed six hundred Philistines single-handed. He too saved Israel.” The Message

Shamgar did not fight the way others fought. They had knives, swords, bows, and arrows. All he had was a cattle prod, or as the King James Bible puts it, an oxgoad. But he used the tool he had and saved Israel.

Other bloggers are writing books or about products or selling tee shirts. Not me. Here I am…over here…with a cattle prod…killing it…for the last ten years.

What tool do you have?

Obediently Do Everything

December 14, 2018

I say the number of followers does not matter. I block the number on my blog. No one sees it. I hadn’t even checked it since last summer. But I was curious since I disconnected from that social media outlet.

I lost over 96% of my followers. Discouraged, I wasted an hour playing Spider Solitaire.

Judges 23:4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 14, 19, “Stay alert. … (6) Now stay strong and steady. Obediently do everything written in the Book of Revelation of Moses – don’t miss a detail. …(8) Hold tight to God, your God, just as you’ve done up to now. … (10) Think of it – one of you, single-handedly, putting a thousand on the run! Because God is God, your God. Because He fights for you, just as He promised. (11) Now, vigilantly guard your souls: Love God, your God. …(14) …Know this with all your heart, with everything in you, that not one detail has failed of all the good things God, your God, promised you. It has all happened. Nothing’s left undone – not so much as a word. … (19) …He is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He won’t put up with your fooling around and sinning.” The Message

That convicted me. I know playing game after game of Spider is just fooling around.

Proverbs 20:24, “A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way?” New International Version

We finished the series, “The Condition of Your Soul,” on Wednesday night. I knew I had to get a handle on my emotions. Steven Furtick provided just the word I needed.

“As a believer in Jesus Christ, you have the ability within you to bounce back. …the harder the bottom, the higher the bounce!” 1:Minute Motivation, “Bounce Back!” Steven Furtick

How do you get out of the doldrums?
